TOP hiking route "Scharfenstein" - Eichsfeld - Thuringia
Castle, landscape, and history: This hike delights with its interplay of dense forest, open landscape with numerous panoramic views, and places full of history. Here nature meets culture.
The 12.1 km circular route starts at the hiking parking lot at Scharfenstein Castle. From here, you can take a detour to Scharfenstein Castle and enjoy the beautiful view. Then the route continues along the ridge path through varied mixed forest to the "Schönen Aussicht Herrenberg" lookout, where a nice resting spot with panoramic view awaits. The path continues a little further through the forest, then enters the bright open fields to soon discover the abandoned village of Steinhagen with the Steinhagen Chapel. It continues through the open fields to Galgenkopf near Kreuzbra, which according to legend was formerly a Wendish (Slavic) sanctuary with a charming view over Eichsfeld. The path then leads along the edge of Kreuzebra, then gently ascends through a picturesque avenue back to the starting point of the hike. Scharfenstein Castle offers an opportunity to rest and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Eichsfeld, the Ohmgebirge, and as far as the Harz mountains.

- If thunderstorm risk arises, you can find a shelter hut at the "Schönen Aussicht Herrenberg" viewpoint.
- Due to dryness in recent years, many trees have been damaged and are prone to breaking. Therefore, be cautious when in the forest, especially during stronger winds. Do not stay under dead tree crowns. Especially beech trees tend to have spontaneous branch breaks.
