In 1956, after the suppression of the Hungarian uprising, around 70,000 people fled over the bridge from Andau to Austria. In November 1956, the bridge was blown up by Hungarian soldiers; many Hungarians then tried to cross the Einserkanal swimming in freezing cold. 40 years later, Austrian and Hungarian pioneers jointly built a new bridge and a memorial to remember the dramatic events.
We start the tour at the covered rest area at the northern end of the escape route and follow it. It is lined throughout with artworks that in one way or another deal with the theme "Flight and Expulsion." After about 40 minutes, we reach the northern corner of the great bustard protection area designated as a national park conservation zone with a small observation tower. We continue along the straight road and arrive after another hour at the Andau Bridge, which was reconstructed in 1996 and completely renovated once more in 2006 and most recently in 2022. It is worth crossing over to the other bank and also looking at the information boards and the memorial on the Hungarian side. At the time of writing, a lookout tower on the Austrian side had already been dismantled due to structural instability, but the construction of a new one is planned.For the way back to Andau, we follow the Hanság Cycle Route sign pointing west on the Austrian side.
