As compensation for the interventions in nature caused by extensive flood protection measures, the island of Tiengemeten, formerly home to nine farms, was purchased and established as a nature reserve in 2007. After just one year, it had developed into a bird paradise. Thanks to several new paths, even migratory birds can enjoy a paradisiacal day.
With the ferry at the bus stop Veerdienst in Nieuwendijk, we cross the Vuile Gat. At the landing on the other side, our path leads multiple times to the left in front of the large farm that houses the Tiengemeten visitor center, to the other side of the small harbor, where we reach the dike. We follow the path around a farm and then continue hiking on the dike. Shortly afterwards, we leave the Vuile Gat on the left and follow the main path to the right. At the end of a gentle left curve, we turn right onto a narrow path; after a sharp left bend, we turn right.About halfway along this wide straight path through the marshland, a detour to the viewing hill on the right (through the fence) is worthwhile. Here once stood an emergency hill as a refuge during high floods. Fifteen minutes later, we can make a detour to the left in the wide right bend to a former potato storage, where a bird observation tower has been installed in the ruins.Shortly afterwards, we reach a dike that leads right
