The Tichá dolina valley was once covered by one of the most powerful glaciers of the Tatras, which reached a thickness of about 130 meters during the last glacial period. In the mountain-forming layers left untouched by it, geologists discovered fossils of pre-deluvial plants and animals, including traces of dinosaurs. Today, brown bears are mainly found here. Although the Tichá valley was previously heavily used for forestry and alpine farming and is also marked by windthrow, it has largely retained its wild character. Many hikers are deterred by the total length of the valley – almost 15 km – but cycling makes any outdoor activity much more pleasant, especially since the lower two-thirds of the valley is traversed by an asphalt forest road.
From the signpost at the central parking lot in Podbanské we first follow briefly the unmarked access road to the Hotel Permon (bike rental) in a northeast direction. After about 300 m turn right and over a wooden bridge to the opposite side of the Belá stream to the asphalt forest road with the yellow marking in the Tichá dolina valley. 30 min later we reach the trail and valley fork at the Tichá forestry house, where the Belá is formed by the confluence of the Tichý and Kôprovský potok streams. We keep left and stay on the main valley on the yellow marked forest road, which ascends moderately but steadily and is lined by forests damaged by wind and avalanches. On the left we see parts of the Western Tatras, on the right the Liptovské-Kopy group already belonging to the High Tatras. Shortly after the Pod Tomanovou fork, behind the side valley Tomanova dolina in the north, the massive limestone massif of Červené vrchy (Wierchi Czerwone, Red Mountains) appears, further east the ridge
