Brennberg Castle flourished in the 13th century. Reimar II of Brennberg was a famous minstrel who made a name for himself with the "Bremberger Tone." This song pattern was also adopted by other minstrels. Later, Friedrich Auer expanded the castle. He was the mayor of the city of Regensburg, but because he allied with the guilds against the patricians, he was promptly thrown out of the city. Since 1935, the ruins have belonged to the municipality of Brennberg. From the wooden observation tower, you can see up to the Alps on clear days. The Höllbachtal nature reserve, on the other hand, appears dark and eerie. The water of the Höllbach rushes past huge, moss-covered rock giants, weathered rock castles rise up – a unique natural experience.
From the parking lot at the church in Brennberg, we follow the sign "Footpath Upper Castle" past the inn "Zur Burg" uphill. Behind the guesthouse, we climb the road on the left and then turn right at the next sign to the Brennberg castle ruins. On the left was the Upper Castle. Straight through the gate arch, we reach the courtyard of the Lower Castle, which emerged in the 14th century from a castle complex with a keep. The wooden observation tower is freely accessible and offers a magnificent view over the hills of the Vorderer Bavarian Forest. Descending from the tower, pass the stone steps north past a wooden shed and, before the row of trees, keep half right into the forest to reach the wobbly stone. It is located a few meters to the right of the path and lies on two rocks.We return to the observation tower and leave the complex by descending left before the gate arch via stone steps to a meadow.
