Through the Bremgartenwald to Bern-Bethlehem
The Bremgartenwald is a popular local recreation area just outside the gates of the city of Bern. This cosy and year-round possible hike leads to the Glasbrunnen and continues on to Bern-Bethlehem.
The Bernese Bremgartenwald starts just after the Länggasse bus stop. There is a distinction between the Great and the Small Bremgartenwald. The reason for this is as simple as it is brutal: Since the 1970s, the motorway has cut through the forest, dividing it into two differently sized parts. The Bremgartenwald is frequented by Bern residents for jogging, walking and strolling. Some also come with empty bottles to fill them up at the Glasbrunnen. The spring is something like the heart of the Bremgartenwald. The water flowing from the wide but simple pipe is of very good quality – and free. For some, the Glasbrunnen is a symbol of fertility, for others a place of power, but for the great majority simply a place of relaxation. The path then leads from the Glasbrunnen to Jorde, you cross the motorway and soon reach the Bern-Bethlehem district.
