Through the Almbach Gorge to Ettenberg and back
Bavarian pioneers built a path through the 3-kilometer-long gorge in 1894 and constructed over 320 steps, a short tunnel, 168 niche paths, and 29 bridges for the elevation drop of more than 200 meters. The gorge can be visited daily in summer (from May 1 onward).

Safety information
When wet, especially be careful on the gorge path due to slipping hazards.Roadbook
After paying the fee at the entrance to the gorge, follow the wide promenade slightly uphill next to the Almbach. Soon, the stream valley narrows into a tight, rocky gorge. Through it, crystal-clear water cascades with roaring noise from one pool to the next. The excellently developed path, secured with railings and wire cables, presents no particular difficulties. However, caution is needed in wet conditions. The gorge widens at intervals before narrowing to less than 2 meters in width. Directly above the whitewater, the path crosses the narrowest part on bridges. Beyond that, the route becomes somewhat more comfortable before passing through a tunnel only 1.66 meters high.
At a signposted point, a path branches off to the right to Ettenberg. From there, continue straight through the gorge towards the mighty Sulzer Waterfall. It cascades down a gigantic wall in several stages from the right into the Almbach. Further up, another path branches off to Ettenberg. Stay in the gorge there as well, cross the bridge to the left, follow the slope a bit up and down, and finally arrive at the Theresienklause.
Cross over the dam structure and along the opposite slope on a narrow path steeply descending slopes to the east. Follow the elaborately constructed path through the Steingraben and then gradually out of the forest onto the meadows of Winkl. At the houses, you reach a road that leads to Hinterettenberg where you turn right and go slightly downhill in the forest. Immediately after the bridge over the Ludlgraben, keep right, briefly follow a hiking trail, and then ascend again on a small road to Ettenberg. Pass the church and the sexton's inn, then descend southeast on a meadow path. The path becomes increasingly steep and leads down the Hammerstiel cliff via many unpleasantly navigable steps until you reach the starting point near the old Kugelmühle (ball mill).
