Compared to the impressive gorges of Samaria and Aradena, the Agia Irini Gorge appears rather modest. With its jungle-like vegetation in the upper section and several narrow points further downstream, it is nonetheless very attractive for hikers. The canyon can already be traversed in April, when the Samaria Gorge is still closed. Dittany grows in the rock crevices, and depending on the season, dragon arum, anemones, and cyclamen bloom along the banks of the stream. A path created in the 1990s with rest areas and fountains leads through the approximately 7 km long gorge, and at the exit there is a nice place to stop at the Oasis snack bar. From there, you hike down a country road to Sougia.
Coming from Sougia, the entrance to the gorge is at the bus stop at the town sign of Agia Irini, about 50 m from the Porofarago tavern. A board provides information about the hiking area; next to it, we go down the concrete path (E4 sign). After 150 m, you pass the Kri-Kri tavern with outdoor tables, usually open early in the morning. The gravel road runs straight along the bank of the Ageriniotis through an old olive grove downstream. At the ticket booth at 538 m, you buy an entrance ticket. 200 m later, you cross the river for the first time on a bridge. Large plane trees line the banks, oleander grows in the streambed, and large boulders are scattered around. The gravel road becomes a path that leads towards the forested slopes rising up to 300 m ahead. After 20 minutes from Agia Irini, a path coming from the Figou gorge on the left (possible detour) merges in. Continuing straight, you soon reach the first rest area at 499 m with a fountain. A few steps further, a small sign shows
