Through forest and fields from Abtswind via Altenschönbach to picturesque Prichsenstadt
Abtswind, first historically mentioned in 783, originally consisted of two places, Großabtswind and Kleinabtswind; however, Kleinabtswind was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. To this day, the village is shaped by its winegrowing and the magnificent sandstone houses in the town center. In modern times, Abtswind has developed into a center for herbal and tea processing as well as spices through several companies.
Ilmbach is a remote hamlet on the western edge of the Steigerwald. It became known as part of Prichsenstadt for its particularly charming location as well as for the 19th-century hunting lodge owned by the Schönborn counts of Wiesentheid.
The Wildpark Rüdern, also in the count's possession, lies very close to Ilmbach and is a popular excursion and local recreation area.
The hike goes via Altenschönbach (Protestant church with a historic painted wooden ceiling featuring 64 coats of arms of Franconian noble families) and past the old Lochmühle mill into the vineyard area of Prichsenstadt, with a magnificent view of this medieval town, the second smallest in Bavaria.
The cityscape of Prichsenstadt is characterized by city gates, half-timbered stone houses, and cobblestones. Mentioned in 1258 in a document by the Counts of Castell; town rights granted in 1367 by Emperor Charles IV. Later owned by the Burgrave of Nuremberg. In 1632, it suffered plundering and destruction by the imperial troops of Wallenstein.
Today Prichsenstadt is mainly shaped by tourism and winegrowing; it is also the largest asparagus growing area in Franconia. An interesting historical town walk.
