If you can only recognize slight similarities between the three hill castles, don't doubt yourself: The name does not refer to their appearance, but to a legendary event—a lightning strike that is said to have hit all three castles simultaneously. Fans of medieval buildings can explore two ruins and one well-preserved castle on this route, each offering great views. Those interested in geology will find fascinating specimens in the exposures of the Middle Keuper, while botanical enthusiasts can enjoy, among other things, species-rich steppe grasslands, wetlands in old peat pits, and service tree-elm-oak forests.

Sabine Gilcher
