"Three Cauldrons" route, Cozla Mountain
The "Three Cauldrons" route complements the gondola lift ascent that almost everyone tries when they are in Piatra Neamț. For locals, the route represents a siesta or Sunday walk, while for tourists, it can bring some pleasant surprises. Among the major advantages of this route is the accessibility throughout the year, including for children.
The path to follow goes straight along the ridge of Cozla Mountain, through a deciduous forest that is exceptionally beautiful and rich in memorable images at different times of the year. The official marking shows a blue stripe, but it appears only sporadically. So you have to intuit the path.
From the very beginning of the walk, you are greeted by extraordinary panoramas of the city of Piatra Neamț and the surroundings, and a little further you have the chance to admire in all its splendor Bâtca Doamnei Lake or Ceahlău.
About halfway through the walk, you pass near a small lake that looks more like a puddle but is nonetheless part of the Cozla Mountain ecosystem.
The Three Cauldrons Rock, the final point of the walk, belongs to the protected area Geological Reserve of Eolian Pots. Since there is nothing to mark this, the rock has been looted. Its name comes from the three generous hollowings whose origin is still debated. Thus, they could be the result of a karst phenomenon, a glaciation, or the wind. It is also interesting that excavations in the ridge area uncovered fish fossils, displayed in the city's Natural Sciences Museum.
Author’s recommendation
If you find the route too short, and to save some money, you can walk up to the end of the gondola station on the paved road. Then descend on the same switchbacks.
