Highlight stage of the Merano High Mountain Trail

The section of the Merano High Mountain Trail that leads westward from the Giggelberg guesthouse and features the Thousand-Steps Gorge, a particularly impressive and wild landscape element, is one of the most beautiful panoramic hikes far and wide. It is fortunate that this section is very well accessible for day tourists thanks to two cable cars and a bus line between their valley stations (ask for the CombiCard at the cable car ticket office!).

From the valley station, 630 m, of the Texel cable car, we float upwards with wonderful panoramic views and a nice view of the nearby steep terrain below us (where a climbing park is also visible) to the mountain station, 1535 m. After a short ascent of a few minutes, the Giggelberg guesthouse, 1565 m, is reached. From there, we hike westward on the parallel slope path marked 24. After crossing the Schindelbach creek, 1520 m, we soon reach an asphalt road. We follow this to the right. Shortly after the 24 hiking trail bends sharply to the left, we arrive at the mountain farm Hochforch, 1555 m. Passing through its buildings, we soon reach a nice rest area with a table – ideal for a packed snack. Shortly afterwards, the path descends rather steeply into the Lahnbach ravine, which due to countless artificial steps was named the "Thousand-Steps Gorge". On the way, one passes by the base of an impressive waterfall. It is advisable not to linger unnecessarily here due to the risk of rockfall
