For those who want to earn their way up Hochfelln instead of taking the cable car, the previously popular ascent route via the Farnbödenalmen from the Ruhpolding side (before the cable car was built) is recommended. Since a longer section of the path is exposed to the morning sun, it's best to start early. The view from the summit of the surrounding, magnificent mountain landscape and the outlook over Lake Chiemsee is stunning. In good visibility, the panorama is said to include 400 peaks. If there is still some time left, the mountain experience can be culturally rounded off by visiting the historic bell foundry in Haßlberg or combining the hike with a visit to the fairy tale park near the starting point.
From the Staudigl hiking parking lot we follow the paved road to the right, cross a small bridge after 400 m, then again turn right (signpost "Thoraualm"), and then immediately left to the Historical Bell Foundry with a slight ascent. From there continue on the forest road towards Thorau – Hochfelln, always accompanied by the roaring, deep-lying Thoraubach stream. After one hour of walking with a steep ascent, the path turns southwest. 200 m later, we sharply turn right onto an agricultural road towards Farnbödenalmen. Through forest up to the Farnbödenalmen and another 20 minutes up to the path coming from Hinterreit on the right. Through forest and over the meadows of Fellnalm, 1380 m, further, finally steeply over the open east slope of Hochfelln in switchbacks up to the summit chapel and the managed Hochfellnhaus, which is located just below the Hochfelln summit. Heinrich Bauregger, geboren 1951 im Berchtesgadener Land, studierte Germanistik und Geschichte (M.A.). Von Kindheit an in den Bergen wandernd unterwegs, lebte er seine Passion zunächst in den Alpen aus, dann folgten zahlreiche Trekkingtouren in den Bergen der Welt (Himalaya, Ostafrika, Mexiko, Anden). Schließlich entdeckte er die Abruzzen (Mittelitalien) als seine zweite Heimat („Tra Mare e Monti“). Heute lebt er abwechselnd in München und in Sulmona als freier Lektor und Autor.
