The Tremetta ridge

You take the funicular railway to Plan-Francey, from where it continues on foot towards the Gros-Plané mountain hut. Here, a herdsman («armailli») continues the tradition of artisanal cheese making. From the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century, the alpine farms employed up to a dozen people, including a master cheesemaker, a shepherd, a bouèbe (apprentice), a milker, a tailor, and a «Barlatè», a young herdsman responsible for transporting the cheese to the lowlands. The profession lost importance when dairies emerged in the lowlands in the 1830s. Today, the herdsmen and their products are gaining new appreciation. Now continue straight ahead towards Alp Le Villard. At the crossroads, turn left onto the drivable path to reach the Chalet de Tremetta. Its name comes from the La Trême river, which rises nearby. Hike over the pass along the Moléson ridge. The path gradually ascends – and soon you will reach the hiking destination. The observatory near the restaurant offers an impressive view of the Alpine massif, the Lake Geneva region, and the Gruyère area. With these beautiful images in your mind, you then take the cable car back to Plan Francey.
