Whether you’re soaring up in a cable car to the pilgrimage church of Montallegro, whether along the ridge or on the wooded descent—the view over Rapallo and its vast bay never ceases to impress, offering ever-changing perspectives.
Across from the bus terminal at the Montallegro cable car’s upper station, after a few steps, you pass through a stone gate and walk up a partially stepped ramp to the pilgrimage church of Nostra Signora di Montallegro, 613 m (built in 1557, restored in 1896; the Baroque interior features many ex-votos from sailors). Passing it on the left (water faucet), you’ll reach a fork in the path (F.I.E. map and explanation of trail markings in the Rapallo hinterland). To the right behind the choir apse, a path paved with large stones and illuminated at night leads to the hotel-restaurant Il Pellegrino, which offers a beautiful terrace view of Rapallo. Passing the hotel on the right, you reach the marked hiking trail (two red squares, a red diamond, and a signpost), which follows the main ridge of the mountain range running parallel to the coast behind Rapallo in a southwesterly direction—almost always shaded by deciduous trees.
