The Nigardsbreen (Breen = glacier) is a glacier tongue of the Jostedalsbreen, the largest mainland glacier in Europe.
The route is just under 13 km round trip and only moderately ascending with about 150 m. The pure walking time is therefore about 3 hours. But especially the glacier with its glacier portal and the surrounding glacier-polished landscape are very impressive; many will linger longer and find beautiful photo motifs.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at the Glacier Information Center, we first continue along the road leading from Jostedal towards Nigardsbreen.
At the barrier where the toll road begins, the hiking trail branches off to the right, also leading to the lake and its parking lot.
Through partially marshy sections, you hike through the area from which the glacier retreated centuries ago and which today is partly covered with small trees and bushes but also features heathland.
After crossing the road, you reach the lake and shortly afterwards a very large parking lot usually well filled with buses, motorhomes, and cars. At its end the landscape changes and transitions to glacier-polished rock slabs over which part of the path leads. Inexperienced hikers often find this more difficult.
Already from afar you can see the glacier hanging deep into the valley with its beautiful glacier portal, which shines a lovely blue-white depending on the sunlight.
While tourists are led onto the glacier in huge rope teams and marvel at the glacier crevasses, we walk back and briefly visit the Glacier Information Center.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The starting point of the hike is from Jostedal, where local buses run. The Jostedal begins in Gaupne on the Luster Fjord, the northeastern part of the Sognefjord: Bus Express lines to "Laerdal radhus". Local bus from Laerdal to Nigardsbreen.
Many travel agencies and hotels offer bus tours to Nigardsbreen.

Also, at the end of the toll road a large parking lot at the lake. From here, however, only a short walk to the glacier without a previous hike through varied landscape.

Equipment
Sturdy footwear and sure-footedness required, even though many poorly equipped people are seen on the path from the parking lot at the lake to the glacier.
The first part of the hike is partly marshy and wet. Gaiters protect shoes and feet from moisture here. Rainwear should always be in the luggage in Norway.
Localization
