Slippery descent between "Montorient" and "Courbouzon"Before leaving, we advise you to read the section Hiking Tips, to equip yourself properly, to bring supplies, to check the weather forecast and to take a charged phone. In all cases, do not overestimate your strength.
In the Jura, hikes follow paths and trails through private properties that may also be used for other activities. Please respect the places by staying on marked trails and respecting other users (hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders, but also forest operators, winegrowers, shepherds…).
The Jura is a natural and wild department, please respect the environment in which you move: Do not litter, do not make fires, do not pick wild flowers. Respect the peace of livestock and wildlife by keeping away from herds, keeping your dog on a leash and closing gates behind you. Inform yourself about biotope protection zones, nature reserves or Natura 2000 areas where restrictions apply.
In case of forestry work (logging, hauling…), trail work (trail repair, clearing…) or ongoing hunts or drive hunts for your safety, know when to give up and turn back.

The Tower of Orient
The Romans chose the site of Montorient to monitor the region and the road starting from Lédo (Lons-le-Saunier), climbing Mont Coelius (Montciel), descending to Messia, passing through Gevingey… to reach Lyon. They built a tower that overlooked the Bresse and was visible to the east, hence its name: the Tower of Orient. It served as a lookout and communicated by fires with neighboring towers.
In the Middle Ages, Montorient was a fief under the lordship of Saint-Laurent-La-Roche. A fountain, called
“Merovingian washhouse”, hidden under a vault, provided the water supply. The square tower had a terraced vault at its top meant to place a fire. It was located on the mound surrounded by ditches, near the cistern.
