Here we experience nature and culture up close. They do not exclude each other, they complement each other.
The Upper and Lower Locks were built for rafting short timber on the Kirnitzsch in the 16th century. Since the rich forests were not accessible by transport, the stream was used from Bohemia to Bad Schandau.
From the Buchenparkhalle in Hinterhermsdorf, we first follow the "blue line" marking to the Upper Lock. On a boat, we pole down the 700-meter-long Upper Lock. From the lower boat station we continue to follow the "blue line" marking. Note the huge spruces here, they are among the tallest in Germany! Always following the valley, we follow the forest road to the Lower Lock, a sandstone dam system. Here, the water and wood were dammed again before finally making their way to the Elbe. After the Lower Lock, at the Thorwalder Bridge, we must choose either the route via Zeughaus and Zschand (marked with a blue line) or the path along the Kirnitzsch. Both paths are the same length.A botanical rarity can be found on the Kirnitzsch above the Buschmühle: three large spruces stand completely without soil on a rock. In the valley there are beautiful spots with bright yellow sulfur lichen. Now we reach our destination, the Neumannmühle.
