The Kienberg is not considered a destination in its own right. There are numerous higher and even more interesting peaks all around it. A loop hike takes you through an area of unspoiled rural culture that was long under serious threat due to plans for a military training area. The two farms in Oberjettenberg display an unusual South Tyrolean architectural style.
From the parking lot by the church in Schneizlreuth, head back to the B 21; just before that, turn left onto the hiking trail, cross a footbridge and pass under the B 21 to the Saalach Bridge, then cross the bridge and turn right onto the access road along the Saalach, which is paved at first but then turns into a gravel path (no public transportation). After about 45 minutes, you’ll reach the idyllically situated Haiderhof. At the farmhouse, turn left and head up the forest trail, which will take you to Oberjettenberg in about 20 minutes. Shortly before reaching the two farms, keep to the right and after 15 minutes you’ll reach a paved road. Follow this road (about 1.5 km) until the trail to Unterjettenberg branches off on the left. Take the wide forest trail over a small ridge and down to Unterjettenberg. There, you’ll come to the Deutsche Alpenstraße; follow it 100 meters to the left, then turn right briefly into the village, and soon after, turn left again toward the Alpenstraße.
