The Hohe Dirn Loop from Losenstein
The Hohe Dirn, along with the nearby Anton Schosser Hut, can be reached from Losenstein via well-marked and scenic trails. The return route takes us over the Sonnkogel in a loop back to the starting point.
However, we begin the descent with another climb up to the Sonnkogel. Following hiking trail 467—which leads us down partly along paved roads—we make our way back to Losenstein in a loop, without having to retrace any of the paths.

Safety information
The Klausgraben is not recommended in wet conditions because the crossing into the gully itself is very exposed and muddy, even though a safety rope is available there. To cross the stream in the Klausgraben, you’ll need to use some slippery rocks for support; hiking poles could be helpful here to maintain your balance. The steep ascent (unusual for the Alpine foothills) along Trail No. 33 to the Hohe Dirn should not be underestimated either.
Roadbook
Follow the Hintsteingraben Road for half a kilometer to the “Bauern-Blasl.” At the fork in the trail, turn left and continue uphill along the marked forest road (Trail No. 31 / HD5) through a series of switchbacks until you leave the road and reach the fork with Trail No. 31a (Hintsteiner, Lugstadel). There, follow Trail No. 31a downhill for about 200 m, then follow Trail No. 33 as it climbs ever more steeply up the forest slope to a saddle, where the trail leads us quickly to the right to the summit of the Hohe Dirn (1,134 m). After a short break at the summit, the Anton-Schosserhütte (1,158 m) is a pleasant, relatively short hike of about 15 minutes via Trail No. 33, so you can now enjoy a longer rest at the hut.
For the descent, we take Trail No. 33 over the Sonnkogel heading south. A short descent is followed by a short ascent; after repeating this several times, we reach the summit of the Sonnkogel (1,177 m). We stop our descent southward at the next fork in the trail; from there, Trail No. 467 leads us northeast down to Hamberg. We return to Losenstein on paved roads (with short detours onto trails). A final underpass takes us directly back to the railroad tracks.
