— the writer C. Nodie rightly called this charming and diverse landscape in the heart of the Jura “Little Scotland.” Surrounded by pristine moors teeming with rare flora and fauna, swimming is unfortunately now prohibited in the four magnificent lakes.
From the parking lot at La Fromagerie, we cross the D 39 and follow the white-and-red trail markers northward, passing souvenir shops and a restaurant. At the end of the hike, it’s definitely worth visiting the botanical trail (Sentier botanique) with its 300 or so plants and an exhibition worth seeing. Our trail continues over gently rolling meadows and through the forest. Along the way, we may spot the rare carnivorous sundew. Finally, we pass mostly damp meadows with rocky outcrops, where German gentian, common butterwort, and cross-leaved bedstraw grow. We might even spot a sparrowhawk circling overhead. Near a riding center, our path turns into a gravel road, and shortly afterward we reach a fork. There, we keep to the right and, passing pastures and a wastewater treatment plant, reach the first houses of Le Frasnois.
