Winter hike from Mont Rigi, via Fagne de la Polleur and Setay to Hockai, then along La Vecquée to the Grande Fagne, past Baraque Michel, and back to Mont Rigi

The hike starts on Mont Rigi (though you can also start elsewhere) and then briefly follows the “tourist trail” through the Fagne de la Poleur over “the planks.” And those can get pretty slippery (be careful going downhill). Where the average tourist goes straight ahead, we turn left, into the woods, and cross a very old glacial moraine (yes, you read that right) to reach the Setay bog. Pass by les Six Hêtres toward Hockai. Here, you’ll have to search a bit to find the trail. The GR markers will help guide you. In Hockai, cross the Hogne at the picnic area. Then it’s a steady climb along the “old episcopal” road to the Baraque Michel. Be sure to stop for a moment at the Croix des fiancés—a moving love story. Then, follow a section of the Grande Fagne back to the starting point.

    Author’s recommendation

On snowy days, it can get pretty crowded at Baraque Michel or Mont Rigi, so it’s best to leave early. You can also park in Hockai near the church or in the parking lot just before the bridge over the Hogne.

On busy days, you might run into some “tourists” on the stretch between Baraque Michel and Mont Rigi (and up to 500 meters into the marshes). After that, you’ll have the area all to yourself.

    Safety information

Snow, ice, and mud. The planks can be slippery, or they might be missing along the Polleur River, so you’d better watch your step. You could sink deep into the mud.
