A massive, prehistoric rockslide created the unique landscape of Lake Eibsee. The north shore, with its coves and ponds, small hillocks and hollows, and the seven islets in the lake, makes for a landscape full of variety. A walk through the wooded area at the foot of the Zugspitze offers a beautiful view from above of the mountain lake with its fascinating shades of color. Those who wish to visit the lake’s shore should choose the longer route and take the Zugspitze cogwheel railway back.
From the parking lot at the Zugspitzbahn valley station, walk past the cable car building, then turn left and head uphill on a forest road. Follow the path in wide loops through the forest to the Hochthörlehütte, which is located in a clearing. At the fork behind the hut, turn right onto a wide gravel path and continue through the forest to the state border and the “Eibseeblick” viewpoint (quite overgrown; a better view can be found further along the trail, slightly east of the viewpoint). Descend on the German side and rejoin a forest road. After crossing a ski run at 1,340 m, turn right onto the trail leading uphill (turn left here for Eibsee) and continue to the Seealm service hut at the edge of the ski run. Continue uphill through sparse forest and a hollow (keeping right at each fork) to the saddle at Hohen Egg. Follow a trail down fairly straight and back to the valley station.
