The Thaneller presents a magnificent backdrop when you look at the isolated pyramid shape above the Reutte basin: a true character mountain of the region. At the same time, the Thaneller is also considered the local mountain of Berwang and is usually climbed from this side. The normal route is not very demanding. A different caliber must be expected by those planning the crossing and choosing the exciting Werner-Riezler-Steig through the grim northern side uphill. Everything is trouble-free up to the Thanellerkar, but then it gets serious when a very high rock face broken by gullies must be climbed. But what a great feeling when we finally reach the summit and are rewarded with a top-class panorama...
From Heiterwang, 994 m, initially heading west crossing the bypass to the Karlift, where the actual route (No. 611) begins. In the area of the large meadow clearing, it is initially indistinctly marked. Keep generally to the right and proceed on wider paths towards the notch to the Thanellerkar. The trail continues on the right side and meets a crossing in the broad Thanellerkar, approx. 1650 m. Continue uphill on gravel and keeping left to the entry at the wall base (snowfield depending on the season). The Riezlersteig now skillfully winds through the almost 500-meter-high rock face towards the summit, often using ledges and shelves, threading through gullies (possibly garnished with tricky snow in early summer) and over tiered rock sections. Mark Zahel
