The route starts from the car park opposite Tarbert Parish Church. Strolling along the seafront you can enjoy the bustle of Tarbert Harbour before ascending the steps and path opposite the pier to Tarbert Castle for some lovely views over the village and up Loch Fyne. You have now also joined the Kintyre Way which you will initially follow and return on.
The Tarbert Castle and Viewpoint Trail is a rewarding short hill walk in Tarbert, Argyll, offering a mix of Scottish history, loch views, and woodland paths. Starting from the village centre near Harbour Street, the route climbs past the atmospheric ruins of Tarbert Castle, once fortified by Robert the Bruce. From there, the trail ascends through heather and bracken-covered slopes to a stunning viewpoint at the Millennium Cairn, where you can take in sweeping vistas over Loch Fyne, East Loch Tarbert, and the Kintyre Peninsula. The loop continues through mixed woodland and along part of the Kintyre Way, before gently descending back into the village. This is one of the best short walks in Argyll for combining heritage, scenic photography, and a moderate hill climb—ideal for visitors to Tarbert looking for a peaceful outdoor adventure with a historical twist.
