The route starts from Colletto di Velo and follows the historic track along the ridges of Monte Summano up to the summit, where the imposing crucifix stands. The itinerary develops on a line alternating mixed forest (beech, hornbeam) and rocky ridge with splendid views over the Vicenza plain and surrounding valleys. In some sections, you may encounter remains of fortifications and historical traces of the mountain. The terrain varies, with mule tracks, marked paths, and occasional more exposed stretches. This walk is perfect for those looking for an excursion that combines nature and views, without necessarily a long ascent, but with a length and elevation gain that still require attention and steady pace.
The trail runs the final part of the ridge dividing the Leogra and Astico valleys, offering views up to Pasubio and the Piccole Dolomiti. The historical traces along the ridge — such as walls, ancient posts, and bivouacs — testify to a past human presence at high altitudes, among hamlets and mountain workers who worked this land.
Author’s recommendation
- Consider doing the loop, ascend via the ridge trail and descend via the road.
- At the summit of Summano there is a picnic area with fireplaces and tables. They are free to use, take advantage of them, but carry your trash back down.
- The ridges are exposed to the sun, start early in the morning to avoid the hottest hours.
- In winter there may be ice, better avoid the ridge trail and prefer the road to climb Summano.
