On Tyrol’s northernmost 3,000-meter peaks

. The Sulzkogel is actually the first 3,000-meter peak in the Kühtai area—and a very popular one at that. That’s because, apart from typical scree slopes and occasional snowfields, the standard route presents no particular obstacles. The view from the summit offers a completely different perspective on the turquoise-colored Finstertaler Reservoir—which holds 60 million cubic meters of water—than the one from the Pockkogel, and probably offers an even slightly better view of the distant landscape. In any case, the Sulzkogel can be recommended as an ideal destination for those new to climbing three-thousand-meter peaks.

In Kühtai, we head into the Finstertal valley and, keeping to the left, take the somewhat bumpy trail that crosses the plant road once more at the base of the dam and, cutting through the tunnel loops, arrives at the crest of the Finstertal reservoir, 2,325 m. Since the direct path along the shore is closed for a short stretch, you’ll be rerouted above it. You’ll pass the turnoff to the Pockkogel and hike on flat ground to the southern end of the reservoir. After the large bend, ignore the trail leading left to the Finstertaler Scharte. The trail now climbs steadily, temporarily keeping more to the left along the slopes of the Finstertaler Fernerkogel and Gamezkogel. Above the next ledge, we turn right, gaining elevation gently at first and then more steeply again in the boulder-strewn cirque. From a gap in the ridge, we continue on a path that still feels like an ascent all the way to the summit of the Sulzkogel, 3,016 m. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
