Amundsen Height, Pretulalpe and the easternmost raised bog of the Alps

The Fischbach Alps reach their highest point at the beautifully shaped summit cross on the Stuhleck. The chair (or throne) is a ruler attribute in the pagan context. Historian Fritz Freiherr Lochner von Hüttenbach, who mainly deals with the place names of Styria, compares the Stuhleck with king's or pulpit chairs, so that the Stuhleck could well have been regarded as the seat of the thunder god, especially since there is also a meadow called "In der Höll" here. And the women's spring in Spital am Semmering is considered as the seat of the thunder god's wife. The broad back, forest-free also due to clearing, between the Stuhleck in the east and the Pretulalpe with Pretul and Amundsenhöhe in the west acts as an elongated viewing platform. Our tour takes us first from the Ganzalm via the Amundsenhöhe to the Peter-Bergner-Warte on the Pretul. Then we walk over the long meadow ridge to the east, cross the Schwarzriegelmoos and reach the Stuhleck, one of the easternmost summits of the Alps, which still rises above the tree line. On the descent, we pass the charming Moschkogelhütte, where a stop is definitely worthwhile before returning to Ganzalm.

Our trail no. 742 starts at the Ganzalmhaus, 1389 m (signpost "Pretul/Amundsenhöhe") and continues straight on, ascending at the first road junction – there is no marking here; the forest road running to the left is marked for cyclists. The marking is better after that, and the trail goes in a direct line up to the summit of the broad-topped Amundsenhöhe, 1666 m; there is a beautiful wooden pyramid at the top. The further route is clear in the open terrain. First, we reach – just east of the Roseggerhaus, 1588 m – the treeless hill of the Pretulalpe with the small stone-built Peter-Bergner-Warte, 1653 m. Afterwards, we follow trail no. 740 and march over the broad high ridge of the Rettenegger Alm to the northeast; the turn-off (to the left) to "Moschkogel" (trail no. 741) is only relevant on the return. The scenic high trail leads us to the "Nature Experience Schwarzriegelmoor", 1604 m. This forgotten gem with its unique fauna and flora has been carefully renatured by the Austrian
