Varied easy-to-walk path with many nice seating options. Ideal to get out for a short while, switch off and let your soul dangle.

    Author’s recommendation

Especially the Himmelspforte is an ideal place to enjoy the peace, relax, and have a picnic. The path is especially worthwhile for early risers, as in the morning you can still see the dew and early mist over the meadows and also spot one or another forest animal.

We start at the main building of Hochschule Harz (at the "Cup") and walk to Friedrichstraße. On the opposite side is the "red café", called so by the students, a small bakery with good prices. Behind the bakery, we turn right onto "Am Eichberg", leaving the university on our left and after about 100 meters turn right onto the forest path. Here also begins a nature trail. We follow the path straight ahead towards Ilsenburg (blue dot). We walk past a meadow. Every autumn it serves as the start and finish point of the "Harz mountain run". We pass several small ponds. In these ponds there are graylings, pikes, brown trout, bullheads, perch, and mirror carp. Behind the ponds is another large meadow that invites you to rest and chill. On this meadow once stood the Himmelspforte monastery with its gardens, vineyards, and pond facilities. In 1517 Martin Luther is said to have stayed in the monastery. A memorial stone is supposed to remind of this. We continue straight ahead until we come to a fork. The benches invite you to linger. From here you also have a magnificent view of the meadows, where once the walls of the monastery stood. Here we leave the path towards Ilsenburg and turn left towards Plessenburg / Steinerne Renne. We follow the path and leave the meadows to our left. At a fork, we turn diagonally left and walk back downhill towards Hasserode.
