Stubenberg Route 2 - Over Schellenberg and back
We start in Stubenberg opposite the Hofmark inn. The municipality is one of the 100 pleasure towns in Bavaria. A special event occurred on March 12, 2016, when a meteorite was found that fell on March 6, 2016. The previously found pieces of rock add up to a total weight of 1.5 kilograms. The Stubenberg meteorite was classified as a chondrite and is kept in the Stubenberg town hall. Our route passes the town hall and continues along Hofmarkstrasse. After a few meters, we turn right into Bachstraße and follow the signs. Stubenberg has no direct access to the Inn, which was the lifeline for a long time and also brought income from salt duties. Nobles and knights settled the region. Legends and tales arose – including that of the golden carriage. It is said to be buried in the Stubenberg castle hill. While there is no further evidence, this claim persists. After walking on Bachstraße, we reach the district of Beingarten. Here is the chapel in the corner of a house, dedicated to Saint Mary, Mother of God. We continue and pass the isolated farms Wiesmannhäusl and Wieser. After Wieser, we hear the Prienbach babbling to our right. It is the namesake – we are in the Prienbachtal valley. We continue and enjoy the beautiful nature. Shortly after, we arrive at the farms Oberndorfner and Unterdorfner. Here the actual path leads left into a trail. A detour to the Leonhardi Chapel is possible (continue up a steep hill on the street – at the top, turn left to the chapel). A pilgrimage to the Leonhardi Chapel always takes place at Pentecost. Votive tablets bear the years 1741 or 1797 and are witnesses to many healings in the name of God. Route 2, however, leads from the hamlets Oberndorfer and Unterdorfer through the forest to Kollberg. From here, we continue until we arrive at a paved road. At the intersection, we keep left and follow the road a short distance. Wonderful views over the Inn valley await us. At Engstall, we are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views. Before Engstall, however, a detour to the right into Waldstraße to the chapel on Schellenberg is recommended. If you follow the path after the chapel, you come to the Schellenberg inn. After Engstall, turn left again into a forest path leading to Guttersberg. From here, Beingarten and the starting point in Stubenberg are not far.
THE WELL ON SCHELLENBERG
A few steps from the forest chapel, facing east, stands the last witness of a former settlement ("Schellenberg farmers"). In 1648, the farms fell victim to the roving Swedish war hordes under General von Wrangel. The plots of land were still farmed for a long time afterward. But the harvest on the stony, humus-poor sandy soil was poor, so around 1850, they began to afforest the fields. Mighty tall trees grew up, even where the former farms stood. The preserved well remained open for 200 years until a farmer covered it with heavy rubble stones and it was forgotten. Only in spring 1925 was the rediscovery of the Schellenberg well initiated by Dr. Hans Pinzl, a doctor from Simbach, and enabled through a large donation campaign by the population of Simbach. Martin Edmeier was the first in 1925 to dare to descend 20 meters deep into the well. Rubble and stones were laboriously removed before the water level at 30 meters was reached. On May 30, 1925, a Pentecost Saturday, the Schellenberg well was handed over to the public. So today, a 500-year-old well stands on the highest hill of the Lower Bavarian uplands as a remarkable local monument. (Excerpt: Hiking and Beautification Association Simbach am Inn)
