Strada alta, 1st stage
The Leventina, the main valley of the Ticino River, which already in the Middle Ages took up traffic between north and south, conveys a scenic and cultural transition from the alpine north to the Mediterranean south. The left-side high path "Strada alta Leventina" (it is part of an old traffic route that bypassed the dangerous gorges in the valley) begins in Airolo. It connects the sunny hillside villages above the valley floor at up to 1000 meters altitude and descends again into the valley shortly before Biasca after 45 kilometers. It has been one of the most popular long-distance hiking trails in all of Switzerland for over 50 years. Besides the extraordinary views, it is the picturesque villages and numerous places to stop that have made this trail a classic. The entire high path can best be hiked in three day stages. Numerous access or hiking trails into the valley to the railway stations enable tackling the route in individual stages.
From the station in Airolo, 1175 m, we hike up to the Gotthard road, then turn right and opposite the cemetery into the small street towards Valle. We follow this over the villages Valle, Madrano, and Brugnasco – partly on the former mule track – to Altanca, 1390 m, shortly after the mid-station of the Ritóm cable car (the second access point to the "Strada alta"). Our path leads through the forest, crosses below the stop of the funicular and merges back onto the road at the church of Altanca. We continue on the road towards the southeast, cross a small valley, and then reach the hamlet Cresta di sopra, 1417 m, the highest point of our entire "Strada alta" hike. We follow the road downwards to Ronco and then turn right onto the old mule track to Deggio, 1204 m (bus connection), which boasts beautiful old wooden houses. We leave the road again only shortly before the hamlet San Martino and then ascend on a narrow farm road (near the route is the chapel San Martino, presumably dating from
