Strà Granda, 1327 m
The Mulattiera, known as the "Strà Granda" (dialect for "Great Road"), once connected Ossola with Valais and was an important trade route in the 15th and 16th centuries. We follow this well-preserved route through the entire Valle Anzasca. In the impressive valley, surrounded by rugged peaks, wonderfully preserved hamlets alternate with waterfalls and deep gorges. We pass a large cathedral, a gold mine and old Walser houses before finally arriving at the foot of Monte Rosa in front of the highest wall in the Alps - where we come across the oldest tree in Italy. Along the way, we have the opportunity to spend the night in one of the few hostels in the valley and thus spread the long hike over two days.
From the bus stop in Piedimulera, 250 m, we walk to Piazza Mercato and then turn left into Via Protasi to the old customs tower from the 16th century. In the past, tolls had to be paid here to pass through the valley. Without paying, we now hike uphill on a beautiful mule track. As far as Pontegrande, we can follow the yellow "Antica Mulattiera della Valle Anzasca" signs. Passing an old church and some palazzi, we reach Cimamulera, 495 m above sea level. In the church square, a former chapel exhibits objects from the everyday life of farmers in the past. Behind it, we walk through an alley to the road that takes us to Morlongo. The Mulattiera starts here again. We follow it through several hamlets and past chapels and vantage points from which we can see the distant Monte Rosa. Shortly before Castiglione, at 515 m, we meet a road again. We can shorten the last hairpin bend on the left. We cross the Rio Preggia and turn right again just after a statue of the Virgin Mary.
