Stol is the highest mountain in the Karavanke, a mountain range that stretches along the border between Slovenia and Austria, from the Tripoint above Rateče in the west to Peca far in eastern Slovenia.
Stol is the highest mountain in the Karavanke, prominent in most panoramic shots of Bled. Stol is a magnificent mountain with a bell-shaped summit, located on the border between Slovenia and Austria. From the summit, steep, rugged slopes and gullies descend towards the Upper Carniola region and the Bled Basin. Stol is high but has one of the technically easier approaches among the Karavanke peaks, while the route from the Završnica valley past Valvasorjev dom is long and physically demanding. Just below the summit of Mali Stol, only a quarter hour beneath the main summit of Stol, is Prešernova mountain hut.
Author’s recommendation
Don’t forget to bring a camera on the hike. Excellent maps and guidebooks from the Alpine Association of Slovenia will be helpful for your trip. The trail is well marked with red and white markings and signposts, and the summit of Stol is part of the Slovenian Mountain Trail.

Safety information
The trail in the lower part partly runs across pastures and through forest, later across pasture meadows and steeply winds above the tree line. The hike has a large elevation difference, is quite steep, but is technically not difficult or dangerous.Pay attention on the steep section of the ascent over Prižnica (in wet conditions, the path is muddy and slippery).
The last few dozen metres below the summit and the summit itself are exposed on the northern side, with a cliff below, so do not walk along the edge.
Valvasorjev dom is mostly open year-round, while Prešernova koča is only open in the summer season. Take a snack and enough fluids for the hike.

Roadbook
From the starting point in Završnica we head north, first a few hundred meters along the road towards Valvasorjev dom, then turn left across pastures onto a wide, technically easy but steep path that leads us below Smolnik, crosses a forest road towards Ajdna, and climbs through the forest up to Valvasorjev dom. East of the hut, we take the marked path right through the forest and under screes in a slight ascent to Žirovniška planina. Here the path steeply ascends northwards over steep grassy or forested slopes and climbs in switchbacks to the tree line, where we rest at a scenic viewpoint called Prižnica. We continue right along the ravine on a trail through scrub, and when it ends, the path turns slightly right and follows a wide rocky ridge all the way to Prešernova koča. Behind the hut, we descend a few meters into the saddle between Mali and Veliki Stol, then in a final climb over broken rocky terrain leading left, we reach the summit where a wooden cross stands on the Austrian side. We return to the hut and descend across a wide “shoulder” towards the southeast. At Čelo the path turns west and begins descending over wide slopes that are initially bare, then covered with shrubs, and finally turn into forest reaching Zabreška planina. From Zabreška planina we traverse westwards to Žirovniška planina, continue to Valvasorjev dom, then follow the ascent route back to the starting point in the Završnica Valley.
