The Morteratsch Glacier at your feet

Partially behind and over glacier moraines, you steadily climb up to Chamanna Boval (Boval Hut). From the hut terrace, you are treated to a stunning view of the Morteratsch and Pers glaciers and the imposing peaks of the Bernina massif, including Piz Palü and Piz Bernina.

    Roadbook

You take the train to Morteratsch station, an experience in itself. The walk starts at the Morteratsch restaurant. Shortly after the railway crossing, you find on the right the connection to the signposted path towards Chamanna Boval.

What follows is a varied route...

Initially, you climb through a wooded area, where the Morteratsch Glacier occasionally surprises you by peeking through... The surroundings gradually become a bit more rugged and partly run behind and over the glacier moraine. There is no need to be afraid anywhere, and on the roughest part you can count on a sturdy railing. Only at the end of the route do you get the hut in sight...

From the hut terrace, you are treated to an overwhelming view of the Morteratsch and Pers glaciers and the imposing peaks of the Bernina massif, including Piz Palü and Piz Bernina. Where the glacier tongue has become an unattractive and even dangerous environment, here you see what still is and, unfortunately, what once was.

At this spot, you can debate with climate change deniers.

For the return, take the same path. Just before Morteratsch, however, you can choose the turnoff towards the "glacier tongue" and reach Morteratsch via this detour.
