    Author’s recommendation

From Monday to Friday, the Schlosswirt at Schloss Tyrol is open. Regional dishes at fair prices with a superb view of the Etschtal. You can also enjoy great meals on the Tappeinerpromenade, at Restaurant Thurnstein, in Dorf Tirol, as well as at the Passer bridge. For the author, this combination is definitely a premium path. He awards 81 out of 100 experience points.

Starting point: Gilfpromenade, Steiner Steg. Cross the stone bridge and take the stairs slightly to the left on the opposite bank of the Passer. The access is already signposted here. At the Pulverturm begins the beautiful Tappeinerweg, a promenade with exotic plants, wonderfully arranged. Countless restaurants invite you to linger. Shortly after Cafe Unterwegner, the Tappeinerweg ends at Gratsch. Here you take the street up to the right, past Hotel Thurnergut, to a bus stop where the Algunder Waalweg branches off to the left (bottom left). Following it, you reach a paved path (just before Cafe Konrad), where you go up to the right to the "Ochsentodweg" (bottom right). Initially quite steep, it soon runs very scenic towards Schloss Tirol. Passing Schloss Thurnstein and the charming little church of St. Peter, you finally reach it. The castle terrace is a really nice place to sit (closed Mondays). From the castle, continue to Dorf Tirol. Right at the village entrance, the Falknerpromenade branches off to the right, which you follow until you reach the main road. Here you go down to the right until the end of the village. Behind Hotel Gartner, go right to the Tirolersteig, which leads back to the Tappeinerpromenade.

    Excursions to the Vinschgau

Tips for excursions around Meran and into the Vinschgau with the Vinschgerbahn.

    Directions

The easiest way to get to Meran from Austria or Italy is via the Brenner Autobahn (A22). Then take the expressway "MeBo" from the motorway exit in Bolzano to Meran.

From Switzerland, the best route is via Austria and the Reschen Pass and then through the Vinschgau (Etschtal) to Meran.

You can also enjoy a car-free vacation in Meran. The Meran area has a well-functioning bus system. So, you can leave your car at home or at the hotel and conveniently use the bus to get to your excursion destinations.

Depending on where you come from in Switzerland, it may make sense to travel via the Flüela and Ofen Passes.
