The impressive rock formation of Stenar (formerly also "Steiner") closes off the Vrata Valley to the southwest with its steep, 1500 m high eastern flank. In good weather, the mountain glowing in the morning sun can already be seen from Mojstrana. From its summit, the mountaineer is offered a magnificent panoramic view of the mountains and valleys of the Julian Alps and far beyond. Stenar can be climbed from the Aljažev dom (Aljaž House) on two routes: One path leads on its south side through the high valley of Sovatna to the Dovška vratca (Lengenfelder Törl) and from there to the summit. The second, longer path runs on the north side of Stenar via the Bovška vratca (Flitscher Törl) to the Kriški podi (Križ meadows), meets at Dovška vratca the ascent from the Aljažev dom through Sovatna, and follows this route to the summit. It is advisable to combine both routes, but with regard to the length and demands of the tour, it is recommended to spend the night at the Pogačnikov dom (Pogačnik House). The tour is shorter if you descend from the summit by the ascent path again.
From the parking lot, we hike just under 500 m through the forest to the Aljažev dom. From the mountain hut, we follow the signpost "Pogačnikov dom" and proceed southward into the valley. A rock piton with carabiner designed as a memorial commemorates partisans who fell in World War II; a second memorial plaque honors fallen mountaineers. After just over 1 km, a path marked "Pogačnikov dom" branches off to the right; it leads southwest through beautiful beech forest (Bukovlje), becomes steeper, and reaches the start of the high valley Sovatna, approx. 1500 m. In steep, rocky terrain, we now ascend quickly in a northwesterly direction. The opposite 1700 m high north face of Triglav offers a popular subject for any photographer. The trail overcomes several partly secured steep steps in Sovatna, reaches a wide cirque at 2100 m, and soon thereafter the Dovška vratca at 2180 m. Four paths meet at this notch. We orient ourselves by the signpost "Stenar" and follow the path leading north.
