The Steinsee Hut is quite hidden amidst a landscape typical for the Lechtal Alps. From the front in the Upper Inn Valley, this wild mountain corner is hardly noticeable, and one must first find the "entry" into the narrow Starkenbach Valley, i.e., the somewhat tricky access to the hut parking lot due to the terrain conditions. The hike itself then proceeds surprisingly easily, despite the harsh calcareous alpine environment. Tip: Those who stay overnight upstairs can switch to the Württemberger House on the Lechtal High Trail and later descend again into the Starkenbach Valley.
From the parking lot at the Alfutzalm, briefly descend to the stream and cross to the other side, where a wide path is followed far up the valley. Alternating with flat sections, the path climbs noticeably from time to time. After a while, you pass the mouth of the Wildkarles and the somewhat off-track Vordere Starkhütte (hunting lodge) before the routes diverge near Hinterstark, 1620 m, towards the Württemberger House and Steinsee Hut. We keep right and follow the well-maintained trail along the dwarf pine-covered flank of a terrain incision. Numerous switchbacks are completed until you arrive at the Steinsee Hut, 2061 m. The descent follows the same route.

Mark Zahel
