The long mountain range of the Chiemgau Alps between Lofer and Erpfendorf is formed on its southern side by steep walls, while it slopes more gently on its northern side. Up there are some extensive alpine pasture areas that we want to visit; these are the Durchkaseralm, which is little known on the Bavarian side but forms a complete alpine village, as well as the Eggenalm, where the Straubinger House is located. Our path leads high above the valley of the Großache, which separates the Chiemgau Alps from the Loferer Steinberge. The popular Brennhütte on the access path is no longer operated.
At the large hiking car park on the Steinplatte, we follow an alpine road to the left (there is an interesting nature trail branching off immediately on the right at the beginning, about 20 minutes extra, which then rejoins the main path a little higher up) heading northwest. First slightly downhill, then uphill again and further on level to the alpine village Durchkaseralm (a good 30 minutes, detour halfway to the somewhat lower, rustic Brennhütte possible, which is directly on the nature trail). From the Durchkaseralm the path continues in the same direction until it turns west after a short walk. Now over alpine meadows and through mountain pine fields, past the Betenbichl and Lahnerkogel (here is the only somewhat tricky spot on the path, but it is secured with a wire rope), to the foot of the Eggenalmkogel – which has given the entire area its name. Heinrich Bauregger, geboren 1951 im Berchtesgadener Land, studierte Germanistik und Geschichte (M.A.). Nach seinem Studium war er viele Jahre in Buchverlagen tätig (unter anderem auch beim Rother Bergverlag). Von Kindheit an in den Bergen wandernd unterwegs, lebte er seine Passion zunächst in den Alpen aus, dann folgten zahlreiche Trekkingtouren in den Bergen der Welt (Himalaya, Ostafrika, Mexiko, Anden). Schließlich entdeckte er die Abruzzen (Mittelitalien) als seine zweite Heimat („Tra Mare e Monti“). Heute lebt er abwechselnd in München und in Sulmona als freier Lektor und Autor. Er hat zahlreiche erfolgreiche Wander-, Rad- und Reisebücher verfasst.
