Tricky hut ascent offers solitary summit joys
Although it may not look like it at times, the age-old Immenstadt ski ascent through the Steigbachtal to the Steinköpfle above the Almagmach still turns out to be a real snowshoe delight in a convincing way. The summit view includes not only the rock horns of the Tannheimer Valley and the stunning high-alpine circuit of the Oberstdorf valley basin, but also blesses us with the distant Rätikon, in front of which the mountain heights of the Bregenzerwald gather. In the north, the ridges of the Alpine foothills bring movement to the scene, and at our feet, a streambed that was just inconspicuous from below sketches playful meanders into the pristine white.
Incidentally, the name Steinköpfle can neither be found on maps nor in the Alpine club guidebook. It is only known by locals and insiders as the not particularly prominent elevation in the northeastern part of the Nagelfluh chain nature park, at an altitude of 1669 m, between the two more significant neighbors Steineberg and Stuiben. It can only be added that the summer route, buried under a thick blanket of snowflakes, runs from the upper Steigbachtal to the graceful alpine basin at the foot of the summit through confusing tall forest. This exciting suggestion, sometimes grimly steep, is therefore aimed at well-motivated individuals, independent snowshoe hikers who enjoy navigating and who don’t throw in the towel during a short ascetic intermezzo, but rather gladly include a bit of full-body training into the game for the sake of awakening an intense feeling of life.
We leave the station in Immenstadt briefly towards the center and take the pedestrian railway overpass. Adolph-Probst-Straße leads us straight to the cemetery. From the fork at the exit of the Steigbachtal, we follow the ski and sled accessible alpine path through the forest uphill directly under the landslide from March 2006. The excellently rolled path along the adventurous Tobelbach is decorated with various ice formations. Waterfalls and pools creating bizarre shapes are frozen in winter sleep. Under a striking rock head adorned with a cross, our route joins the wider parallel alpine path. At the junction at the Wooden Chapel, 900 m, we take the always cleared road towards the Nature Friends House. The steeply rising ravine widens between Immenstadt Horn and Mittag into a flat high valley. At the next fork, we choose the Almagmach ascent. Ahead of us rises the broad Nagelfluh flank of Steineberg. Behind it peeks out the clearly more alpine face of Stuiben. At the Ornach hunting
