The short circular route Steinenschlossweg leads through dense forest areas, past impressive rocks, and to a romantic castle ruin.
The hiking trail is about 6 kilometers long and offers great views of the southwestern Palatinate surroundings.
The impressive tower of the castle ruin hints at how massive the original castle complex was. The Salian castle complex was probably built in the 11th century.
The Saufelsen and Kuhfelsen, which the path also passes by, are dreamy spots that represent highlights in the forest in every season. In winter, the waterfall at Saufelsen freezes, which is always a special sight with numerous ice spikes.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
Fire & Smoking - Making fires, smoking, and barbecuing are strictly forbidden in the forest and must be absolutely avoided! Fires and therefore major damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
Travel considerately - Always behave considerately, kindly and respectfully towards everyone you meet on your way.
Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to not disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
Picnic & trash - Remember a trash bag for your trip and take your waste back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
Leash dogs - Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

PWV Hütte Am GrieswaldSafety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees can still fall or branches can break off. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections not passable, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
The start of the short circular hike is at the Biebermühle carpool parking lot. From the parking lot, we walk a few steps straight ahead and climb the steep path at the sign saying "Steinenschloss." Over roots, stones, and steps, we reach a prominent rock on which the ruin of Steinenschloss Castle sits. The history of this Salian castle complex dates back to around the year 1000. We walk past the wall on the left and follow the signposts towards Grieswaldhütte and Saufelsen. On the easy-to-walk forest path, we hike under the mighty motorway bridge and continue steadily through dense coniferous forest. Shortly afterwards, a small stream is crossed on a hairpin bend, and through splendid deciduous forest, we proceed to a sharp left curve. At the curve, we follow the main path and the signs to Saufelsen. In the valley, we turn right and reach the Saufelsen with its small waterfall – an ideal spot for a relaxing break! On the natural path, we walk uphill close to the lively babbling brook and cross it via a narrow bridge. The subsequent ascent to Grieswaldhütte takes place over narrow paths through the forest. At the edge of the village of Thaleischweiler-Fröschen, we go a few steps uphill to the hut for a hearty break. Our hike leads down the hill to the village; here we turn left into the forest and immediately afterwards veer half-right downhill on the path. After leaving the forest, a few meters later we head left uphill towards Saufelsen. After a strenuous climb, we reach the familiar path again and hike back on it to the starting point.
For hikers who prefer longer distances, there is the option from Grieswaldhütte to reach Weihermühle via local hiking trail no. 5 (approx. 6 km, gastronomy), where one can connect to the long-distance hiking trail Saar-Rhein-Main (marked with a yellow cross).
