The circular hiking route links the magnificent view from the Wahlhausen chapel over the Vulkaneifel with a visit to the volcano garden in Steffeln.
During the Second World War (1944), the people of Steffeln vowed to build a chapel honoring the Virgin Mary if the war spared their homeland. Already in the summer of 1946, construction began on the chapel on the Wahlhausen hill at 560 m above sea level; the consecration took place in 1947. The oval building is visible from afar and offers magnificent panoramic views of the Vulkaneifel from the hill.
The volcanic cone of Steffelberg originally had a summit height of 609 m above sea level. The extraction of slag in the last century led to a lowering of the summit by 60 metres and created a deep hole in the landscape. Consequently, the former eruption layers were exposed, and today visitors can look into the crater and observe the volcanic processes. The eastern part of the crater filling has been preserved in the volcano garden.

Roadbook
The entire circular route is marked with the "chapel" logo, but only in one direction.
Start at the Steffeln community center, Lindenstraße. The church path leads past the baroque rectory (15th-18th century) and the Catholic parish church of St. Michael (nave 1711, west tower 1923, sacristy (former castle chapel: 13th/14th century). Along the uphill path there are sandstone Stations of the Cross (1943) with modern Stations of the Cross sculptures. On the Wahlhausen hill (558 m above sea level) stands the votive chapel with the protective cloak Madonna sculpture (1946/47). Magnificent panoramic views up to Nürburg/Hohe Acht. The path continues to the barbecue hut, then via a pilgrimage path through the forest past two pilgrimage crosses down to the Tieferbach valley. After crossing the country road, the path leads uphill through meadowland to the "Wine Road" (a late medieval-early modern long-distance trade route) to the parking lot/entrance of the Steffelberg Volcano Garden. Along the way, there are beautiful views of the dry maar "Laach" (with the Romanhof farmstead), the Steffeln valley and the volcanic mountain peaks in the distance. Shortly before the village entrance, at the rock slope above the country road, is the Judas Thaddaeus grotto. From the "Am Bungert" street, a view of the village of Steffeln and the tuff rock with the parish church. Below the church rock there is a former bakehouse carved out of tuff stone ("Enne Backes") as well as a former beer cellar. (W. Grasediek)
