The Benedictine Abbey of St. Georgenberg-Fiecht has a history spanning over a thousand years. Long before the Fiecht Monastery near Vomp, the monks built the pilgrimage site of St. Georgenberg in the wild gorge landscape of the Stallental (originally arising from a hermitage). Only via the "High Bridge" is it possible at all to reach the monastery rock without difficulties. The most exciting access is through the impressive Wolfsklamm Gorge, whose trail system has existed for over 100 years. St. Georgenberg is one of Tyrol's most important pilgrimage sites and is a cultural asset of the highest order.
In Stans, 563 m, we head towards the mouth of the Wolfsklamm Gorge, pay the fee, and follow the well-constructed trail upwards through the gorge. Numerous wooden stairs (with more than 300 steps) and several bridges make the passage possible. The most interesting part with impressive cascades is located in the middle. At the top, one ascends westwards out of the gorge and reaches a small road to the massive, covered "High Bridge" over the deep Seiergraben. Shortly after, we arrive at the imposing St. Georgenberg Monastery, 898 m.On the descent, we return over the bridge and briefly ascend to the right turn of the Way of the Cross (signposted "Stans"). This path runs above the Wolfsklamm and gradually descends to the hidden Maria Tax chapel. Through the Klammergraben one returns to Stans.

Mark Zahel
