Although located close to Lake Walen, the Speer prominently dominates the eastern horizon of Lake Zurich. Especially when covered with fresh snow, the narrow side facing the Linth plain presents an impressive sight. From nearby, however, it is hardly visible. It stands set back at the intersection of several side valleys and can only be reached by detours.
The shortest ascent starts in Amden, the renowned sun terrace 400 m above Lake Walen. Whether one climbs about 300 meters in altitude via pasture paths or uses the Mattstock chairlift up to Niderschlag, 1269 m, depends on fitness level. From Niderschlag, the route goes around the eastern shoulder of the Mattstock and along its north side westwards to the fork at Hinter Höchi, 1412 m. At the edge of a raised bog, the route winds through a maze of boulders, hollows, and dwarf pines up to the Alpsattel Oberchäseren. A small inn invites to rest before the strenuous final stage begins. Narrow hairpin bends climb through the grassy southern flank. Near the summit, the steepness of the terrain is mitigated by steps. At the top, on the Speer, the highest conglomerate mountain in Switzerland, 1950 m, one can sit comfortably on wooden benches and enjoy the phenomenal panorama. On the way back, from Oberchäseren, keeping left, the Mattstock is circumnavigated. Alpine trails lead via Unterchäseren
