In the 19th century, Prince Johann of Liechtenstein established numerous castles, artificial ruins, and temples in the southern Vienna Woods, reflecting the romantic spirit of the time. Some of these can be admired in the Sparbach Nature Park, the oldest nature park in Austria, founded in 1962. The park, enclosed by a wall, houses cultural monuments as well as freely roaming wildlife, and also features a visitor center.
Just a short distance from the Hinterbrühl motorway exit (A 21), the main entrance Schnepfenstein to the Sparbach Nature Park is located in the small Vienna Woods village of Sparbach. From the visitor center, the main path gently ascends along the Sparbach stream to a forest pond with a mill. The feeding areas are often visited by groups of wild boars. Shortly after, the path splits. From the foot of the Johannstein ruin (2) one could ascend directly (northwards) into the narrow Sparbach valley, but the main path leads us to the right in wide bends to the open meadow area with the Diana temple. After a lengthy rest, there is the option to continue the path a bit further and climb the wooded Heuberg. There, a visit to the Köhlerhütte ruin, which is located slightly off the path, is recommended. Unfortunately, it is not possible to continue hiking along the park path to the Höllenstein, as the northern gate of the nature park is closed year-round. Therefore, we hike back along the ascent
