South Austrian Jakobsweg, 2nd stage from Murberg to Lebring (based on an idea by Peter Lindenberg)

The stages are short, easy, and both the start and end points are accessible by public transport

Peter Lindenthal, a pioneer of Jakobsweg pilgrims in Austria, first published a guide for a Jakobsweg through South Austria in 2002, last revised in 2007. This route leads on adapted stretches from Murberg to Lebring-St. Margareten station.

This part of the route is only conditionally suitable for cyclists (forest and meadow sections). The path from Wildon is also impassable for wheelchairs or prams.

This description is based on experiences from Dec. 2019/Jan. 2020. Conditions on the path may always change! As the author, I point to the individual's personal responsibility.

    Safety information

Occasionally, I noticed yellow marking dots and dots with dashes, suggesting a marking as Jakobsweg, although the marking guidelines for Jakobsweg do not fully apply. In the area Wildon - Lebring - Lang, the marking is mostly very good. The route overlaps with other hiking trails.

The path is barrier-free and pram-friendly up to Wildon. Beyond Wildon, neither applies!

    Roadbook

From the roundabout at Murberg, we walk along Dillachstraße heading south. After about 500 m, just before the fire station, the "old" path turns into Talstraße. However, we stay on Dillachstraße along the edge of the terrain. This street also has less traffic than Talstraße. From here, there is almost always a beautiful view over the Mur valley. We pass a wayside shrine that shows not only Mary but also a depiction of St. James. The Weissenegger Chapel in Dillach, built in 1889 in neo-Gothic style, is dedicated to John the Baptist. Shortly thereafter, we pass Weissenegg Castle (private) and follow the road down to the Mur to the power plant area, where we meet the "old" Jakobsweg again. At the end of the power plant area, we leave it again and cross the Weissenegger mill canal and the Mur to the west side of the river and now follow the Mur bike path R2 heading south. However, in summer, bike traffic is to be expected here. In contrast, the route east of the Mur is dominated by heavy local traffic (cars and trucks).

Shortly before Wildon, we leave the bike path and walk on a field path to the railway embankment, which we follow to the railway bridge. We go under this and follow the Kainach to the bike bridge. Those who want to stay in Wildon go right before the bike bridge and cross the Kainach on the road bridge to the Strohmaier inn.

Those who want to go directly to the market go left after the bike bridge to a long flight of stairs leading steeply upwards.

In the market, the path leads south to the roundabout at the Mur bridge. Here the "original path" joins again. At the bus stop shelter on the right, you find the first yellow shell on the asphalt. The rest of the route is clearly marked here. Eventually, you end up in the forest at Buchkogel. The path runs along Buchkogel partly on the route of the Adria-Vienna pipeline and is well marked with yellow dots.

When you leave the forest, an asphalt road leads uphill to the right. The marking can be hidden under leaves or dirt. After a few houses, you reach a small wayside shrine with a "luxury bench", which refers not only to the view. From there, the way down to the parish church Lebring-St. Margareten is hardly to be missed. After the church, we continue a bit along the village street. Those who want to continue the Jakobsweg follow it westwards towards Stangersdorf. We turn off at the oil mill heading south and reach Lebring station (S-Bahn station) after about 800 m.
