No other mountain in the Semmering area offers more comprehensive insights into this old, renowned cultural and mountain landscape than the Sonnwendstein. From its pyramid-shaped summit, dotted with transmission facilities, you can overlook the round of the well-known "greats" of the Vienna local mountains, such as Schneeberg, Raxalpe, Wechsel, and Stuhleck. Both the renowned Kummerbauerstadl inn at the Göstritzsattel and the Pollereshütte on the Sonnwendstein provide for physical well-being on this cable car-free mountain today. The descent via the thrilling Almsteig trail demands your legs once again but quickly brings you back to Maria Schutz.
From the church square in Maria Schutz, 100 m east along the main street, then right onto the green-marked Parapluieweg (arrow "Sonnwendstein") and later keep left on the Panoramaweg without significant elevation changes towards the southeast. On the comfortable path to the beginning of the Göstritz valley, at a fork keep right (green marked), moderately steep upwards to a farm road. From there across the Göstritz stream and the steep forest slope (blue marked again) in several switchbacks up to the Göstritzsattel with the inn Kummerbauerstadl, 1079 m. From here, take the Weinweg (yellow signs, No. 834) southwards through the forest in a deeply cut hollow way, moderately steep up to a forest ridge and flatter further to the Blochberger Marterl at a crossing cart road. On the yellow-marked trail, turn right through the northern slopes of the Alpkogel gently ascending to the Dürrsattel, 1350 m.
