The Rechelkopf is the first notable peak at the entrance of the Isar valley into the foothills of the Alps. It sends out several ridges, one of which is the alpinistically insignificant Schürfenkopf. However, its southern flank, the Sonntratten, is visited very frequently as it belongs to the sunniest spots in the Isar valley. A hike is especially worthwhile in snow-poor winters to soak up a good portion of sun on the viewing meadows.
From Obergries, head first south and along the Steinbach to the foot of the Sonntratten. A simple, occasionally somewhat steep trail leads up to the sunny hill. You could also descend on the same path, but especially if there is no snow, it is worth continuing on along the elongated ridge of the Schürfenkopf. Over the scenic Riedelwiese, descend into the Isar valley towards Lehen and then continue comfortably flat to the Gaißach stop.

Leave Obergries station and follow the intersecting Obergrieser Straße to the left into the small village. At the second opportunity, turn right into Griesweg, which leads south. At the edge of the village, the road turns into a footpath that continues in the same direction and parallel to the nearby railway line. After crossing the wide Steinbach, turn left and follow a footpath upstream along the stream. After crossing a local connecting road, a driveway continues on the same side of the stream, still following the Steinbach. After some time, the path turns slightly to the left and crosses the stream on a bridge. On the other bank, continue and pass the access to Draxlalm and the Reiserlift. Shortly afterward, turn left onto a driveway and again turn left at the next junction. Before the parking lot, turn right onto an ascending driveway. After a left curve, leave the driveway by continuing straight and now continue uphill on the Sonntrattensteig. This path climbs the slope quite steeply in parts, with some sections having steps. Just below the summit meadows, the trail briefly goes through a small patch of forest before reaching the actual destination: hopefully with plenty of sun and a great panorama, you can enjoy a well-deserved break!
The second part of the route leads from the panoramic meadow initially north into the forest. Still gently ascending, you reach the highest point of Schürfenkopf, behind which a driveway begins that leads with slight ups and downs along the elongated ridge. At a larger junction, a trail leads left, which descends quite quickly to the Riedelwiese. Almost near the valley, you reach a driveway that eventually leads down to the valley floor and turns into an asphalt lane. From here, follow it into the small village of Lehen and turn right there. At the exit of the settlement, turn left at the road junction towards Untergries. Cross a street there and continue slightly to the right in the same direction. Before the railway underpass, turn right into Bahnhofstraße and continue to the stop Gaißach.
