Thanks to its location on the most important hiking routes through the Schladminger Tauern, the Preintaler Hut is considered one of the most important mountaineer's accommodations in this mountain group. It is also the starting point for an ascent of the highest peaks entirely on Styrian soil (e.g., Hochwildstelle, Waldhorn) and offers the shortest access to the Klafferkessel, the "natural wonder of the Schladminger Tauern" (see tour "Klafferkessel"). Within its tour area, there are several other scenic highlights such as the "Alpinsteig through the Höll" on the hut path or the Sonntagskarseen nature reserve. However, you should plan two days for this if traveling with children.
The most beautiful ascent starts from the parking lot in Untertal, following a forest path to the right of the two-tiered, impressive Riesachfall waterfall upwards, then crossing the stream on a footbridge and arriving at a fork: left is the hiking path – right is the Alpinsteig (variant). The first leads us to a forest road, which we follow to the Obere Gfölleralm. There, the Alpinsteig also joins. On the road, we walk down to the Riesachsee and across the long, flat valley floor past more alpine pastures to the Kotalm (hut material lift). Accompanied by small waterfalls, a well-trodden footpath (No. 777) leads us over a shaded, rock-strewn terrain step up to the Preintaler Hut. The route 784 to the two Sonntagskarseen runs behind the hut and the neighboring Waldhornalm first flat along the stream, reaches a larger valley floor above a block step, then leads right over a ridge to a waterfall and up to the Lower Sonntagskarsee.
