Due to its shape, Ebenstein appears as a striking rock block in the western Hochschwab massif. It is considered the local mountain of the Sonnschienhütte and is a popular photo subject in the Schwaben area. We reach the broad summit structure at the southern summit, the highest point of Ebenstein with a small summit cross is found at the neighboring northern summit. It doesn't really matter which summit we choose as a resting place. At both spots, we can only do everything right and gaze in amazement into the distance.
From the Sonnschienhütte we walk towards Jagdhaus, but before reaching it we turn right onto the marked trail 829/831 to Ebenstein. This trail is well marked and leads steadily ups and downs through doline terrain, past the '1600' elevation mark to the Sonnschienbründl spring. A few meters before the water source, we turn right onto the now signposted trail 831 towards Ebenstein. With a view of Brandstein, we ascend a meadow path to the distinctive rock nose of the Little Ebenstein with a memorial cross; the pole markings serve for orientation. After the broad saddle, the steadily steepening path leads over a secured crossing to the southern summit of Ebenstein. We reach the highest point of Ebenstein to the northwest after a few minutes. The magnificent mountain panorama definitely invites to a long rest. From the southern summit, we look down to the Sonnschienalm and start the descent, which leads us back on the same path to the Sonnschienhütte.
