The Sonnenstein is "the" lookout hill of the northern Eichsfeld: The view extends far beyond Duderstadt to the west towards the Leinebergland, while in the eastern direction, Thuringia's "Ayers Rock", the reddish potash tailings heap of Bischofferode, appears exotic and landscape-defining. Also on the tour program: the former inner-German, now Thuringian-Lower Saxony border, where nature filmmaker Heinz Sielmann filmed a first documentary in 1988 ("Animals in the Shadow of the Border") about the biodiversity of the border strip and thus became one of the pioneers of the "Green Belt".

After a winding course, it reaches a T-junction with another forest road, onto which we turn right. On the ridge, 20 m to the left offset, we find a field path that loses height in the open country. Sabine Gilcher
